STEP 1- RNA viruses Flashcards
These are the two mneumonics to help remember the RNA viruses:
- “i went to a RETRO TOGA party and drank FLAVORED CORONA and ate HIPPY CALIFORNIA PICKLES”
* *Those are the ____ sense RNA viruses - “Always Bring Polymerase Or Fail Replication”
* *Those are the _____ sense RNA viruses - There are two viruses not included in those mneumonics (you be DR!!)
- Retroviruses, Togaviruses, flaviviruses, coronaviruses, hepevirus, caliciviruses, picornaviruses
* *These are the positive sense RNA viruses - Arenaviruses, Bunyaviruses, Paramyxoviruses, Orthomyxoviruses, Filoviruses, Rhabdoviruses
* *These are the negative sense RNA viruses - The two RNA viruses not included in those are the Reovirus and Delta virus…more on that later
Which RNA viruses are naked? Which are enveloped?
“always give CPR and a PAPP to naked Hippys”
Naked: C-Caliciviruses P-Picornavirus R-Reovirus Hippy- Hepevirus
Enveloped: all others
Which viruses have an icosahedral capsid? Which have a helical capsid?
Thankfully, all the positive sense viruses have an icosahedral capsid. All the negative sense viruses have a helical capsid
Medical importance of Reoviruses (2)
What do each cause
- Coltivirus–Colorado tick fever
2. Rotavirus– severe diarrhea in children
Medical importance of Picornaviruses (4)
“I went for a PEEK on the PERCH”
P-Polivirus E-Echovirus: aseptic meningitis R- Rhinovirus: cold C-Coxsackievirus H- Hepatitis A--> acute viral hepatitis
Coxsackieviruses cause (5)
- Aseptic meningitis
- Herpangina (mouth blisters and fever)
- Hand, foot, and mouth disease
- myocarditis
- pericarditis
Medical importance of Hepevirus (1)
- Hepatitis E
Medical importance of Calicivirus (1)
- Norovirus
Medical importance of Flaviviruses (5)
1 major one, two important, two not so much
- Hepatitis C
- Yellow fever
- Dengue fever
- West Nile Virus
- St. Louis encephalitis
Medical importance of Togavirus (3)
*One really important one
- Rubella
- Eastern equine encephalitis
- Western equine encephalitis
Medical importance of Retroviruses (2)
- HTLV– T cell leukemia
2. HIV/AIDS
Medical importance of Coronaviruses (2)
- Common cold
2. SARS
Medical importance of Orthomyxoviruses- 1
- Influenza virus
Medical importance of PaRaMyxovirus- 4
- Parainfluenza– croup
- RSV–bronchiolitis
- Measles and Mumps
Medical importance of Rhabdovirus-1
Rabies
