Stages Of Changes Model Flashcards
What is the stages of change model?
an integrative theory of therapy that assesses an individual’s readiness to act on a new healthier behavior, and provides strategies, or processes of change to guide the individual
What’s involved in the pre-contemplation part of the “stages of change model”?
Where there is no intention of changing behaviour in the near future (6 months approx), generally appearing unmotivated and resistant to change.
What can we do to help a patient through the Pre-Contemplation stage?
Establish rapport and Increase awareness of need for change and concern about the current pattern of behaviour; envision possibility of change
What’s involved in the contemplation part of the “stages of change model”?
The individual state their intent to change in the near future but are ambivalent about change. Aware of pros and cons.
What is involved in the preparation part of the stages of change model?
Individual intent to actively change, within the next month or so, and preparation is therefore a transition from contemplation to action rather than a stable state
What can we do to help a patient through the preparation stage of change?
Creating a change plan, clarify goals and strengths, offer advise, lower barriers to change, help grow social support, explore treatment expectations and the patients role.
What is involved in the ‘action’ stage of change?
The individual is making changes, or has done so recently.
How can we help a patient through the ‘action’ stage of change?
Revising plan as needed, reinforce the importance of remaining in recovery, support a realistic view of change through small steps, help the patient to identify high-risk situations and talk through appropriate coping strategies.
What is involved in the maintenance, relapse and recycling stage of change?
Individuals maintain the gains made and prevent relapse
What can we do to support a patient through the maintenance, relapse and recycling stage of change.
Help the patient to identify and sample different sources of pleasure (new-reinforcers), support lifestyle changes, affirm the patients ability to recover, maintain supportive contact, develop a “fire escape plan”, review long term goals, explore the meaning and reality of recurrence.
What does regression represent in the stages of change model?
Movement backward through the stages
What do slips represent in the stages of change model?
Brief returns to the prior behaviour that represent some problems in the action plan
What does relapse represent in the stages of change model?
A return or re-engaging to a significant degree in the previous behaviour after some initial change.
