What is personality?
The unique combination of traits that make you an individual, including characteristic behaviours, attitudes, feelings, and ways of thinking. Our personality manifest in our moods, attitudes and opinions and is clearly expressed when we interact with others.

True - most of an individuals personality traits are continually modified by their environment throughout their lifetime
What are some characteristics of a healthy personality?
Positive self-concept, body image, sense of self-worth, and is able to relate to others openly and honestly.
What are some characteristics of a personality disorder?
Inflexible, maladaptive behaviours; Manipulation, hostility, lying, poor judgement, and alienation that interfere with social or occupational functioning.
What are the main influencing factors of a personality disorder?
Poor parenting (inconsistent discipline/supervision), rejection, lack of love (attachment), abuse, conflict, family history of PD, drug & alcohol use, PTSD, early exposure to trauma, and genetic components esp. BPD.
how does the DSM-5 define a personality disorder?
An enduring (lasts a long time) pattern of inner experience and behaviour that deviates markedly from the expectations of the individuals culture, is pervasive and inflexible, has an onset in adolescence or early adulthood, is stable over time and leads to distress or impairment.

Cluster a - Odd or Eccentric
Cluster b - Dramatic, erratic, or emotional
Cluster c - Anxious and Fearful

Paranoid Personality Disorder, Schizoid Personality Disorder, and Schizotypal Personality Disorder

Antisocial Personality Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Histrionic Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

What problems do you see when diagnosis a personality disorder?
Potential: Stigma & Discrimination, substance misuse, cultural differences, co-morbidity with MMI, and organic disorders (Parkinsons ect).
What is most needed to be addressed in the nursing diagnosis of a person with a personality disorder?
Risk assessment, suicide risk, vulnerability and substance use.
What are some nursing diagnosis for a patient with a personality disorder?
Risk of suicide, Risk of substance abuse, Risk of self harm
What are some nursing interventions for a patient with a personality disorder?
Group therapy, counselling, Therapeutic relationship aka Listening, ASSESSMENT (risk assessment, MSE, functional inquiry), managing self-harm wounds.
