What are the main skills in communication?
Attending, understanding, exploration, reassurance and closure.
What is “attending”
- Body language and initial impressions
- SOLER: “Sit squarely”; “Open posture”; “Lean towards the other”; “Eye contact; “Relax”.
- Demonstrate that you are listening.
What should you include in your introduction?
Name and role - and ensure body language is professional
What is included in the understanding compenent?
Building a rapport, being present and avaliable, summarising, validating concernings and using active listening techniques (restating, paraphrasing and reflecting feelings).
A patient with a diagnosis of major depression who has attempted suicide says to the nurse, “I should have died! Ive always been a faliure. Nothing ever goes right for me.” Which response demonstrates theraputic communcation?
A) “You have everything to live for”
B) “Why do you see yourself as a faliure”
C) “Feeling like this is all apart of being depressed”
D) “You’ve been feeling like a faliure for a while”
D (The use of the word “WHY” is not theraputic)
Whats involved in the exploration section?
We must ask questions appropriate to the situation, ask open questions, use silence, avoid the “Why” question and use gentle commands such as Can you tell me more?
Whats involved in the reassurance section?
Be present and spend time reassuring, draw on the patients strengths and resources and avoid false reassurance
How do we conlude a theraputic relationship?
Let the clients when the time
How to conclude a theraputic relationship?
Let the clients know when the time on the ward will finish. Give the younger children lots of notice, summarise what has happened during admission and discuss good strategies moving forward then give a warm farewell wishing them well in a authenic manner.
