What are some nursing considerations when working with those with eating disorders (long list)?

A

Cardiac complications, Starvation, electrolyte embalence, dental hygiene, weight gain/loss, amenorrhea (loss of periods), osteoporosis (weak bones), dehydration, low body temp, muscle wasting, inflammation of oesophagus and peptic ulcer, cognitive impairments, impacts to family/relationships

A

Low self-esteem, feelings of inadequacy, depression or anxiety, high achievers, difficulty expressing emotions, ineffective coping strategies, and perfectionism

A

Life events (major changes), dieting, ever pressure, inability to effectively deal with stress, personal or family hist of obesity, troubled personal/family relationships, sexual/physical abuse, hist of teasing or bullying.

A

Low body weight and body image distortion with an obsessive fear of gaining weight which manifests itself through depriving the body of floor, often coinciding with increased levels of exercise

A

The potentially fatal shifts in fluids and electrolytes that may occur in malnourished patients receiving artificial refeeding (resulting from hormonal and metabolic changes) and causing serious clinical complications

What is bulimia nervous?

A

A serious psychiatric illness characterised by recurrent binge-eating episodes. These are associated with a sense of loss of control and immediately followed by feelings of guilt or shame which then leads the person to compensatory behaviours such as self-induced vomiting, fasting, over exercising, laxatives or enemas.

What are the signs and symptoms of bulimia nervousa?

A

Difficulties with activities that involve food, loneliness, deceptive behaviours, fear of disapproval of the illness, mood swings (depression, changes in personality), self-harm, suicide attempts, sensitivity to references about weight and appareance, guilt, self-disgust, self-loathing, anxiety, frequent trips to bathroom, food avoidance, fluctuations in weight, erratic behaviour.
