Somatic symptom/related disorders
Excessive concerns about physical symptoms or health. Commonly known as hypochondriacs. Tend to pay frequent visits to doctor and have negative opinion. Three criticisms:
Symptoms are varied
Criteria are too subjective
Patients often think diagnosis stigmatises too much
Somatic symptom disorder
Key feature is excessive anxiety, energy or behaviour focused on somatic symptoms that persist for at least 6 months
illness anxiety disorder
Preoccupation with fears of having a serious disease despite having no significant somatic symptoms
Conversion disorder
Suddenly develop neurological symptoms such as blindness, seizures or paralysis, though not related to neurlogical damage.
