Genetic paradigm ch2 Flashcards
Paradigm
Conceptual framework or approach within which a scientist works. Set of basic assumptions, general perspective defining how to conceptualize and study a subject
Genetic paradigm
Interplay between nature and nurture. Polygenetic (several genes responsible) and heritability (degree of variability accounted for by genetic factors)
Behavioral genetics
Study of the degree to which genes and environmental factors influence behavior. Genotype is genetic makeup, phenotype observable behavior.
Molecular genetics
Specific genes and their functions. 23 pairs of chromosones. Similar genes are alleles and single nucleotide polymorphism studies single nucleotide.
Epigenetics
How gene environment interacts and alter gene expression.
Challenges of genetic paradigm
Specification of how the genes influence each other
Complexity of genetic explanations, many genes can be implicated.
