Depersonalization/derealization disorder
Experience of detachment from the self and reality
Dissociative amnesia
Lack of conscious access to memory, typically of a stressful experience. The fugue subtype involves traveling or wandering coupled with loss of memory of one’s identity or past
Dissociative identity disorder
At least two distinct personalities that act independently of each other
Amnesia
May last from several hours to several days. Can cause disorientation. Severe stress can cause it. Memories don’t encode right way. Tend to focus on central features of threatening situation and not to peripheral features
Epidemiology
Not well researched. Two models of DID
Posttraumatic model
key element for developing DID is the use of dissociation to cope with trauma
Sociocognitive model
Alters appear in response to suggestions by clinicians (iatrogenic), media or cultural influences in people who have been abused and seek explanations for their symptoms.
