sru periparturient dz Flashcards
anorexia and depression in a pregnant sheep
likely preg tox. look for ketones
what causes pregnancy toxemia
high energy demand and competition for glucose between dam and fetus
what are the two types of preg tox
obesity related and starvation
what is the most important VFA for gluconeogenesis
propionate.
treatment for mild preg tox
propylene glycol, calf oral electrolytes, cheap red wine
how are we treating severe ketosis
dextrose IV, oral propglycol, fluid, +- insulin, B12, vit C
Induce if severe, or c section
when do we c section
if fetal HR is <100 BPM
how to prevent preg tox
3-3.5 BCS, high energy feeds for at risk females
propionic salt in last month of gestation
when is hypocalcemia seen in sheep
periparturient right before or after
2-4 weeks post partum tachy, fasciculations
hypomagnesemia
stiff gait, tremors, paresis, periparturient
hypocalcemia
tx for hypocalcemia
ca borogluconate or CMPK 30-60 mLs.
repeat e24hrs.
what do you tell owners to do once you treated hypocalcemia
watch for return of clinical signs, watch for prolapse or dystocia.
if you are suspicous of hypocalcemia what should you do
check for preg tox. Ca IV in a ketosis sheep can kill it due to potential liver failure.
Ca range that is normal
8-9mg/dL
