What are children eating in the USA? What are they lacking?
Mostly empty calories (snack type foods)
Not enough whole grains, seafood/plant protein and vegetables
What is milk anemia?
Anemia is lack of iron
Calcium in milk decreases absorption of iron so too much milk can cause anemia
What percentile is considered overweight and obese in children/teens?
- BMI in the 85th to 95th for overweight
- BMI greater than or equal to 95th percentile
What shapes a child’s eating behavior ?
- physical and social environment
- Parental influence
Parents need to control access to food, time and location of meals and the environment surrounding meals
Why arent children eating very well?
- Parents dont eat well so the kids dont either
- food jags (foods kids like or dislike but they grow out of these)

5 ounces grains, 1.5 cups veggies and fruits, 2 cups dairy and 4oz protein
6-8 years old food recommendations
1800 calories
6oz of grains, 2.5 cups veggies, 1.5 cups fruit, 2.5 cups dairy and 5 oz protein
