Sport Psychology Flashcards
Open skill
Seen in sports such as football where the situation is always changing
Closed skill
This takes place in a predictable environment and the player knows exactly what to do
Basic skill
One skill that the player finds easy and needs little concentration
Complex skill
Needs the players full concentration as it is technically difficult to perform
The main methods a coach will use for guidance and feedback:
- visual guidance
- verbal guidance
- manual guidance
- mechanical guidance
Visual guidance
The most common way is through the coach doing a demonstration
Verbal guidance
Verbal guidance is sometimes used before giving a demonstration or used with visual guidance to verbally explain
Manual and mechanical guidance
Using physical touch or using a machine. The coach can help the performer to execute the skill, safely and successfully and ‘feel’ how the movement should be done.
Intrinsic feedback
Intrinsic feedback comes from the performed themselves, as they think about how they feel they performed or what contribution they made to a team/game
Extrinsic feedback
Extrinsic feedback comes from an outside source:for example, from a teacher or coach
Concurrent feedback
Concurrent feedback is feedback/advice giving at the time of the performance
Terminal feedback
Terminal feedback is feedback given after the performance perhaps by a coach, fellow teammate or family
What ways can you mentally prepare for a performance?
Mental rehearsal (visualising, superstition, tradition) and warm up
