Spine - Neck Muscles Flashcards

1
Q

What is the difference btw a global mover and a local stabilizer?

A

A global mover generate torque and range of movement while local stabilizers are deeper muscles that control segmental movements of the spine

Q

What are the origins and insertions of the superficial (and one deep) anterior neck muscles?

A

Platysma - Origin @ pectoral fascia and inserts @ the mandible

Action: Tenses skin of the neck; depresses mandible

Sternal Head of Sternocleidomastoid - Origin @ the sternum and inserts @ the mastoid process

Clavicular Head of Sternocleidomastoid - Origin @ the clavicle and inserts @ the mastoid process

Action: Flexes, laterally flexes, and CONTRALATERALLY rotates neck

Longus Colli - Origin @ the anterior aspects of C3-T3 vertebrae and inserts on the anterior aspects of C1-C6 vertebrae (several segments and bundles)

Action: Flexes neck and rotates neck at the cervical vertebral joints (ipsilateral)

Longus Capitis - Origin @ the anterior tubercles of transverse processes of C3-C6 and inserts @ the basilar part of the occipital bone

Action: Weak neck flexor

Q

What are the lateral neck muscles? Os and Is? Actions?

A

Scalenus Anterior - Origin @ the anterior tubercles of transverse processes C3-C6 vertebrae and inserts @ the scalene tubercle of the 1st rib

Action: Flexes, contralaterally rotates, and laterally flexes neck; elevates first rib

Scalenus Medius - Origin @ the transverse processes of C2-C7 vertebrae and inserts @ the superior surface of the first rib

Action: Laterally flexes and elevates the first rib

Scalenus Posterior - Origin @ the posterior tubercles of the transverse processes of C4-C6 vertebrae and inserts @ the external surface of the second rib

Action: Laterally flexes and elevates second rib

Q

What are the origins, insertions, actions of the superficial posterior neck muscles?

A

Upper Trapezius - Origin @ the base of the skull, occiptial protuberance, and posterior ligaments of the neck. Inserts @ the posterior aspect of the lateral 3rd of the clavicle

Action: Extends and laterally flexes neck, contralateral rotation

Splenius Capitis - Origin @ the nuchal ligament and spinous processes of C7-T3 vertebrae and inserts @ the mastoid process and occipital bone

Action: Ipsilaterally rotates and extends neck

Splenius Colli (cervicis) - Origin @ the spinous processes of T3-T6 and inserts @ transverse processes of C1-C3 vertebrae

Action: Ipsilaterally rotates, laterally flexes the neck at the cervical vertebral joint and extends neck

Levator scapulae - Origin @ the transverse processes of C1-C@ vertebrae and posterior tubercles of transverse processes of C3-C4 vertebrae. Inserts @ the superior angle of the scapula, medial border

Action: Extends and laterally flexes the neck at the cervical vertebral joints

Q

What are the origins and insertions and actions of the deep posterior neck muscles?

A

Semispinalis Capitis - Origin @ C4-T6 vertebrae and inserts @ the occipital bone

Action: Extends and contralaterally rotates the head (small contributor)

Semispinalis Colli (Cervicis) - Origin @ the transverse processes of T1-T6 vertebrae and inserts @ spinous processes of C2-C5 vertebrae

Action: Extends and contralaterally rotates the head @ the cervical vertebral joints (also maintains curvature of the spine and stability of the spinal column)
