Psych revision - Week 11 Active and Healthy Aging Flashcards
What does urban aging mean?
Urban aging is the trend of population aging occurring alongside increasing urban environments
Urban environments can prevent or produce opportunities for older adults to be healthy and active
PA and active living for older adults is shaped by which four factors of their environment?
PA and active living for older adults is shaped by:
- Their natural environment such as clean air, rain/wind
- Their built environment such as physical barriers, safety and aesthetics
- Their social environment
- Their individual determinants such as their health conditions and behavior
What are the three models/theories that explain individual determinants of PA and active living behaviours?
- Self-Determination theory
- Theory of Planned Behavior
- COM-B (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation Behavior model) model of behavior change
What are the three beliefs that influence one’s intentions - and in turn their behaviours - in the Theory of Planned Behaviour?
a) Beahvioural belief - one’s attitude towards PA behaviour
b) Normative belief - social pressures/values/expectations of others
c) Control belief - one’s ability and control over performing the behaviour in their current context
*All the these beliefs directly influence one’s intentions for behaviour. Although, CONTROL BELIEF also directly influences behaviour
What are the three components of the COM-B model that will deliver a behavior? (One or more of these is needed to deliver/maintain a behaviour)
- Capability
- Opportunity
- Motivation
What is active aging vs. healthy aging?
Active aging is participation and security in PA in order to enhance quality of life as people age
Healthy aging however, is allowing people to be and do what they value throughout their life by creating appropriate environments and opportunities
What were the four stages of the “Improving Your Local Area” citizen science in local urban communities study?
Stage 1. Discussion groups to identify barrier and facilitative themes for active and healthy aging
Stage 2. Discovery tool walks to identify these barriers/facilitators irl
Stage 3. Discussions to co-produce recommendations for promoting active/healthy aging
Stage 4. Workshops to improve ‘your local area’ with stakeholders
What theory/model does the “Improving Your Local Area” citizen science communities study use in order to improve the behaviours of older adults? What components of this theory/model are being addressed?
The Capability, Opportunity and Motivation Model.
The study attempts to influence opportunity and motivation for older adults by providing recommendations for infrastructure change, improved PR, reduced car usage, provide local toilets etc.
