  • Biased treatment can affect athletes positively

A

Self-Efficacy is “The perception of one’s ability to perform a specific task successfully.”

Self-Efficacy is a STRONG PREDICTOR of behavior and performance. It is also important for health and well-being

Why is Self-Efficacy important?

A
  1. It predicts behavior patterns and therefore (+) human behavior
  2. It predicts thought patterns (Mental health)
  3. It’s related to goal setting
  4. It is task specific but can generalize to other similar skills/situations
  5. Self-Efficacy results in higher levels of PA

*If someone has the skills and motivation, the MAJOR DETERMINANT OF PERFORMANCE IS SELF-EFFICACY

  1. PERFORMANCE ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  • can be sport performance or exercise adherence based
  1. Vicarious experiences
  • demonstrating or modelling
  1. Verbal persuasion
  • can be in the form of evaluation feedback, expectations by others and self-talk
    -not as strong a source as performance accomplishments and vicarious experiences
  1. Emotional arousal
  • being in the right state of mind
  • can be perceived as facilitative or debilitative and therefore (+)vely or (-)vely affect self-efficacy
