What is the definition of Self-Confidence?
Self-Confidence is how sure of something someone is; the belief that they can successfully perform a desired behavior
What theory can self-confidence be represented by in performance?
The Inverted U Theory represents Self-Confidence in relation to performance
How can expectations affect performance?
Coach/teaching figure’s expectations can influence the behavior of an athlete
- Increased f and quality of interaction and feedback with high expectation athletes
- Biased treatment can affect athletes positively
What is the definition of Self-Efficacy?
Self-Efficacy is “The perception of one’s ability to perform a specific task successfully.”
Self-Efficacy is a STRONG PREDICTOR of behavior and performance. It is also important for health and well-being
Why is Self-Efficacy important?
- It predicts behavior patterns and therefore (+) human behavior
- It predicts thought patterns (Mental health)
- It’s related to goal setting
- It is task specific but can generalize to other similar skills/situations
- Self-Efficacy results in higher levels of PA
*If someone has the skills and motivation, the MAJOR DETERMINANT OF PERFORMANCE IS SELF-EFFICACY
What are the 4 sources of Self-Efficacy?
- PERFORMANCE ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- can be sport performance or exercise adherence based
- Vicarious experiences
- demonstrating or modelling
- Verbal persuasion
- can be in the form of evaluation feedback, expectations by others and self-talk
-not as strong a source as performance accomplishments and vicarious experiences
- Emotional arousal
- being in the right state of mind
- can be perceived as facilitative or debilitative and therefore (+)vely or (-)vely affect self-efficacy

- If the task achieved was of great difficulty or reinforced by others
- If the task was considered easy by others or achieved through luck
