Psych revision - Week 6 Self Determination Theory Flashcards
What are the five levels of motivation regulation on the continuum? From highest quality to lowest quality
Intrinsic motivation
- Autonomous motivation because one believes ‘it is fun’
Identified motivation
- Autonomous motivation one engages in because it is important to them
Introjected motivation
- Controlled motivation to do smt because they ‘would feel guilty if they didn’t’
External motivation
- Controlled motivation to do smt because of EXTERNAL pressure from others
Amotivation
- They don’t understand why they continue
What type of motivation leads to PA adherence and a positive relationship with PA?
Autonomous motivation
What are the ‘checkpoints’ on the continuum of Correlation Coefficients?
+1 is total positive correlation
0 is no correlation
-1 is a total negative correlation
*Typically, values 0.5 and higher are considered a ‘large’ correlation
What is the basic structure of Self Determination Theory? (Flow diagram)
The SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT can either be autonomy supportive or autonomy controlling of the 3 Basic Psychological Needs
The 3 Basic Psychological Needs;
Autonomy
Competence
Relatedness
are important for motivation regulation i.e what kind of motivation one employs
If the basic needs are satisfied i.e supported instead of thwarted, more autonomous motivation will be experienced leading to higher levels of PA and/or enhanced wellbeing
What is the definition of competence? (One of the basic psychological needs)
Competence the ability to do something successfully or efficiently. Feeling ‘efficacious’
What is the definition of relatedness? (one of the basic psychological needs)
Relatedness is feeling connected or cared for
What is the definition of autonomy? (one of the 3 psychological needs)
Autonomy is personal control or volition; a choice and a voice
What are the two types of autonomous motivation? What are the two types of controlled motivation?
Intrinsic motivation and Identified motivation are AUTONOMOUS forms of motivation
Introjected motivation and External motivation are CONTROLLED forms of motivation
What is an example of competence thwarting?
- Making fun of someone’s ability
- Focusing on the past or problems
- Punishing a mistake
What is an example of autonomy supporting?
- Asking questions
- Accepting feelings and perspectives
- Providing a rationale
- Providing opportunities for input and choice
What is an example of relatedness thwarting?
- Being unfriendly or cold
- Only talking to people during activity
- Focusing only on those engaged
What kind of motivation has the best PA adherence outcome?
Intrinsic motivation
What are the two typical kinds of social environments? What do they consist of?
Autonomy supportive environment.
- Generally promotes choice, understanding and prodies a rationale for why we are doing this. They allow for input of participants and consider the indiv.’s POV
or
Autonomy controlling environment
- Generally exerts pressure and is coercive. This environment limits choice, devalues the indiv.’s perspective and has a negative regard for people
*Both affect the three basic psychological needs
