What is the definition of Hedonic wellbeing?
Hedonic wellbeing is subjective wellbeing that reflects a person’s indiv. evaluation of their quality of life or HAPPINESS
It has 3 components:
- Life satisfaction
- Presence of a positive mood
- Absence of a negative mood
What is the definition of Eudaimonic wellbeing?
Eudaimonic wellbeing is considered psychological wellbeing that relates to someone’s sense of purpose. Eudaimonic wellbeing is living well by flourishing and fulfilling human potential (self-realization)
Components include:
Experiences of fulfillment, strengths, life purposefulness and personal development, rather than just simply happiness
What are Ryff and Singer’s 6 key dimensions of psychological wellbeing?
- Self acceptance
- Purpose in life
- Autonomy
- Environmental Mastery
- Positive relationships
- Personal growth
*Theses measurements of wellbeing help researchers to define Eudaimonic wellbeing, whereas hedonic wellbeing allows people to tell researchers what makes their life good
Why is wellbeing important to study?
- Wellbeing is a key indicator of psychological functioning and positive human health
- Organizations use wellbeing as an outcome to measure success i.e the effectiveness of interventions
Which measure/type of wellbeing has Self-Determination theory embraced?
Self-Determination has embraced the concept of Eudaimonic wellbeing as a central definition of wellbeing, but does acknowledge the Hedonic defin. in research
Self-Determination theory suggests that the 3 basic psychological needs are key factors that foster both HEDONIC and EUDAIMONIC wellbeing

Motivation regulations enhanced or thwarted by the social environment, can lead to autonomous or controlled motivation that in turn is correlated with wellbeing
