Spinal Cord Trauma Ch. 16 Flashcards
How do children fair compared to adults w/ spinal injury
have better outcomes
Pedi factors that increase spinal trauma risk (4)?
- large head v. body, 2. weak spinal muscles, 3. spinal column more elastic, 4. immature vertebral, more horizontal facets
How does SCI effect temprature regulation?
May not be able to maintain temperature via vaso constriction and dilation secondary to loss of sympathetic nerve impulses.
Signs of SCI w/ neurogenic shock
bradycardia and hypotension
Three Signs of SCI involving the pelvic region?
- priapism, 2. incontinence, 3. abnormal rectal tone
How does downs syndrome increase SCI risk?
they have more atlocranial instability
What is a Primary SCI?
mechanical injury (compression/flexion/disruption)
What is a Secondary SCI and list four causes?
indirect injury to the spinal cord from hypoxia, hypoperfusion, hemmorhage, ischemia
What is a Spinal concussion?
What can cause it and how does it effect function?
How long do symptoms last?
What might be seen om imaging?
jarring or shaking leading to temporary loss of function for hours to days, not seen on imaging
Signs of spinal shock` (3)
- bradycardia, 2. hypotension, 3. temperature instability
