Integral Part of CNS
- Begins at the end of the medulla oblongata to 1st or 2nd lumbar vertebra
- Pathway for sensory impulses to the brain and motor impulses for the brain
- protected by spinal meninges.
31 pair of spinal nerves that emerge from the spinal cord.
- 8 cervical nerves - C1 - C8
- 12 thoracic nerves - T1 - T12
- 5 lumbar nerves - L1 - L5
- 5 sacral nerves - S1 - S5
- 1 coccygeal nerve - CO
