Nervous System Flashcards

Q

Parts of the Nervous System

A

Nervous System

  • Brain
  • Spinal Cord
  • Nerves

2 Categories

  • Central Nervous System (CNS)
  • Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
  • Controls center of the body
  • Control & directs all functions of the body system.
  • interprets what is taking place in the eternal environment so muscles contract in relational to stimuli.

Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)

A

Nervous System

  • Coordinates and facilities body mechanics
    • via the somatic nervous system
    • voluntary control of the skeletal muscles.
    • Autonomic nervous system
      • control cardiac and smooth muscles.

Contains

  • Cranial & Spinal nerves
      • connect the spinal cord and brain with muscles, glands & receptors.

Neuroglia

A

Nervous System
Nerve Cell Terms

  • Connective tissue cells that help protect the nerves tissue and bind it to other structures as well as aiding in the repair of cells

Neuron

A

Nervous System
Nerve Cell Terms

  • A functional cell of the nervous system that contains fibers, called dendrites, which carry messages away from the cell body.

Q

Synapse

A

Nervous System
Nerve Cell Terms

  • Space between the junction of the two neurons where the termination of the axon of on neuron comes into close proximity with dendrites of another, thus ensuring that nerve impulses will travel in only one direction.

Neurotransmitter

A

Nervous System
Nerve Cell Terms

  • Substance that is released when the axon terminal of a neuron is excited and either inhibits or excites the target cell.
