The Long Bones
Muscular System
– Make up the arms and legs
Components
- Diaphysis - Long narrow shaft of the bone that has central marrow cavity and two irregular ends.
- Epiphygis - Hollow cylindrical shaft of the bone.
- Compact Bone - Hard, thick bone that make up main shaft of the long bone and the outer layer of the various other bones.
- Spongy Bone - The bone that remains when hard hard bone dissolves.
Axial Skeleton
Muscular System
- Skull - 8 Cranial Bones & 14 Facial Bones
- Vertebral Column
- 7 Cervical Vertebrae bones
- -12 Thoracic Vertebrae bones
- 5 Lumbar Vertebrae bones
- 1 Sacrum bone
- 1 Coccyx bone
- Vertebral Column
- -Sternum - Breastbone
- -Ribs- 7 true ribs, 3 false ribs, 2 floating ribs
- -Hyoid Bone - U shaped bone in neck
Appendicular Skeleton
Muscular System
- Shoulder Girdles - 2 Scapulas & 2 Clavicles.
- Arms- 2 Humeruses, 2 Radii & 2 ulnae
- Wrists
- Hands- 16 Carpals, 10 Metacarpals, & 16 phalangs.
- Pelvic Girdle- Ilium, ischium & pubic bone.
- Legs – Upper Leg- Femur. – Lower Leg -2 tibiae & 2 fibulae
- Ankles - 14 Tarsals & 2 Calcaneous bones (heel)
- -Feet- (Foot) - 10 Metatarsals & 28 Phalanges
Muscular System
Muscular System
Kinds
- – Smooth – Involuntary and striated - make up the walls of the hallow body organs as well blood vessels.
- Skeletal – Voluntary and heavily striated - attached to the bones that aid in movement.
- Cardiac – Striated and involuntary - make up the walls of the walls of the heart.
Functions
- Movement of skeleton - both appendicular and axial the provision of body shape and posture and the production of heat for the body.
