The Brain

A

Parts of the Brain

Composed of Neutron & Neuroglia
– acts as supporting cells.

–Protected by the Skull & Meninges.

–Made up of Gray and White Matter

3 Major Parts

    • Cerebrum
    • Cerebellum
    • Brain stem
        • Medulla oblongata, pons, and midbrain.

Q

Cerebrum

A

Parts of the Brain

  • Largest Part - 2 hemispheres - separated by a deep longitudinal fissures.
  • -Surface- Numerous fold of convolutions called gyri.
  • -Each hemisphere - separated by furrows called fissures or sulci.
    • Each hemisphere - 4 main lobes
        • frontal lobes
        • parietal lobes
        • temporal lobes
        • occipital lobes

Q

Lobes

A

Parts of the Brain

Frontal

  • anterior portion of the cerebral hemisphere.
  • controls - mood, smell and motivation

Temporal

  • Posteriorly to the occipital lobe
  • controls - judgement, sense of hearing and aid in memory.

Parietal

  • Division of each cerebral laying beneath the parietal bones.
  • controls - and evaluates the senses of touch, taste and pain.

Occipital

  • Posterior region of cerebral hemisphere.
  • controls - vision and is pyramid shaped.

Q

Cerebellum

A

Parts of the Brain

– Dorsal to the pons and medullla oblongata.

– coordinate voluntary movement.

–Does not initiate voluntary movement , it interfaces with many brain stem structures that execute various movements including posture, balance and running.

Q

Brain stem

A

Parts of the Brain

3 parts

    • Medulla oblongata,
    • Lowest part- continuous with spinal cord above the level of the occipital bone
      • regulates heart beat, swallowing, breathing blood pressure and involuntary reflexes.
  • -pons
    • Controls functional breathing
    • Located on the ventral surface of the brain stem between the medulla oblongata and cerebral peduncle.
  • -midbrain
    • Connects pons and cerebellum with the hemispheres of the cerebrum.
    • Reflex center for eye and head movements in response to stimuli.

Cranial Nerves

A

Parts of the Brain

12 pair - 4 categories

- - Visceral Motor Impulses
- - Somatic Motor Impulses
- - Special Sensory Impulses
- - General Sensory Impulses

I. Olfactory Nerves - Sense of smell
II. Opitc Nerves - Sense of sigh.
III. Oculomotor Nerve - Contraction of eye muscles.
IV. Trochlear Nerve - Movement of eyeball.
V. Trigeminal Nerve - Chewing, touch, pain.
VI. Abducens Nerve - Movement of the eyeball.
VII. Facial Nerve - Movement of the face.
VIII. Vestibulocochlear Nerve - Sense of hearing
IX. Glassopharyngeal Nerve - Sense of taste and motor skill of swallowing
X. Vagus Nerve - Larynx, pharynx; also aids in the production of digestive juices.
XI. Accessory Nerve - Swallowing and movement of the head
XII. Hypoglossal Nerve - Muscles of the tongue, swallowing, and speech
