lumbar cistern (subarachnoid space between l2 and s2)

its the preferred spot because the spinal cord is absent and nerve roots are the cauda equina are mobile

needle is introduced between l3 and l4 or l4 and l5

*children between l4/l5 since spinal cord may be inferior
