Face and orbit Flashcards

1
Q
A

Facial Artery

It is embedded in a groove on the under surface of the submaxillary gland. It then curves upward over the body of the lower jaw

Branches of the right and left facial arteries anastomose freely with
one another as well as with other arteries supplying the face.

Q

what is this what intiatiates secretory activity here?

A

the secretory activity of the parotid is initiated by
parasympathetic fibers originating from the glossopharyngeal nerve

Buccinator muscle

posteriro to the memaster. The fibers converge toward the angle of the mouth, where the central fibers intersect each other. different than the memsater which runs vertically.

Q

what is this?

where does it receive fibers from?

A

Submandibular Gland

receives secretomotor fibers from

parasymps mandibular branch of trigeminal (v3) and via the chorda tympani, a branch of the facial nerve

Q
A

superficial temporal artery

the smaller of two terminal branches that bifurcate superiorly from the external carotid. Based on its direction, the superficial temporal artery appears to be a continuation of the external carotid whcih travels under the parotid

A

temporal vein

eventually connected to both the external and intenral jugular veins which lioe on top of carotid

The superficial temporal vein joins the maxillary vein to form the retromandibular vein.

Q
A

Frontal Nerve

The frontal nerve is the largest branch of the ophthalmic nerve(V1) of trigeminal nerve (V)

branches into supraorbital (lateral) and supratrochlear

22
Q
A

Supraorbital Nerve

branch of the frontal nerve, off of the opthlamic (v1), off of the trigeminal nerve

innervates: skin over the medial aspect of the nose and forehead

23
Q
A

Levator Palpebrae Superioris

muscle directly under the frontal nerve

24
Q
A

Superior Oblique Muscle

this is past the trochlea

25
Q
A

Superior Oblique Muscle

originating in the upper, medial side of the orbit

innervated by trochlear nerve (cn 4)

26
Q

nerve going to top muscle on medial side

A

trochlear nerve

cn 4

goes into superior oblqiue

27
Q
A

trochlea

pulley for the superior oblqieu muscles

28
Q

attaches to eyeball

A

Superior Rectus (2)

below the l levator palpebrae superioris and unlike the levator palpebrae superioris, actually attaches to the eye itself

lacrimal gland is lateral

parasym secretomor innervagtion from:

  1. greater petrosal nerve of facial nerve
  2. zygomatic nerve of maxillary nerve or V2 (branch of trigeminal nerve)
36
Q
A

medial rectus

*on same side as superior oblqiue

37
Q
A

lateral rectus

38
Q

describe the course of the occulomotor nerve

A

occulomotor nerve

It enters the orbit via the superior orbital fissure and controls most of the eye’s movements, including constriction of the pupil and maintaining an open eyelid by innervating the levator palpebrae superioris muscle

innervates:

  1. parasympathetic innervation of the constrictora pupillae and ciliary muscles of medial rectus, inferior rectus, inferior oblqiue, superior rectus
  2. somatic motor component of CN III also innervates the levator palpebrae superioris muscles bilaterally. These muscles elevate the upper eyelids.

39
Q

A

Abducens Nerve

goes to the lateral rectus

40
Q
A

. The anterior ethmoidal branch of nasociliary nerves continues, entering the nasal cavity where it is sensory to the mucosa.

41
Q
A

Identify the nasociliary nerve

. This nerve can be found running obliquely toward the medial wall of the orbit, passing between the superior oblique muscle and the medial rectus muscle.

42
Q

A

the nasociliary nerve

running between the medial rectus and the superior oblqiue

43

44
Q

Superior Ophthalmic Vein

  • begins at the inner angle of the orbit in a vein named the nasofrontal which communicates anteriorly with the angular vein;*
  • ends in the cavernosa sinus*
  • travels with opthalmic artery*

important connections: facial vein via the supraorbital vein
