Face and orbit Flashcards

Facial Artery
It is embedded in a groove on the under surface of the submaxillary gland. It then curves upward over the body of the lower jaw
Branches of the right and left facial arteries anastomose freely with
one another as well as with other arteries supplying the face.

facial artery
goes in groove of submandibular, lingual artery does not!
Branches of the right and left facial arteries anastomose freely with
one another as well as with other arteries supplying the face.

Masseter Muscle
goes from zygomatic to lateral part of mandible

Masseter Muscle

goes from zygomatic to lateral part of mandible
what is this what intiatiates secretory activity here?

Parotid Gland
the secretory activity of the parotid is initiated by
parasympathetic fibers originating from the glossopharyngeal nerve

Buccinator muscle
posteriro to the memaster. The fibers converge toward the angle of the mouth, where the central fibers intersect each other. different than the memsater which runs vertically.
what is this?
where does it receive fibers from?

Submandibular Gland
receives secretomotor fibers from
parasymps mandibular branch of trigeminal (v3) and via the chorda tympani, a branch of the facial nerve

superficial temporal artery
the smaller of two terminal branches that bifurcate superiorly from the external carotid. Based on its direction, the superficial temporal artery appears to be a continuation of the external carotid whcih travels under the parotid

vein running with the temporal artery

temporal vein
eventually connected to both the external and intenral jugular veins which lioe on top of carotid
The superficial temporal vein joins the maxillary vein to form the retromandibular vein.

Temporalis Muscle

Temporal branch of facial nerve
- Ten Zebras Bit My Clavicle*
- Temporal, Zygomatic, Buccal, Masseteric, Cervical*

buccal branch of facial nerve
- Ten Zebras Bit My Clavicle*
- Temporal, Zygomatic, Buccal, Masseteric, Cervical*

Temporal, Zygomatic, Buccal, Masseteric, Cervical

mandibular branch of facial nerve
Ten Zebras Bit My Clavicle
Temporal, Zygomatic, Buccal, Masseteric, Cervical

cervical branch of facial nerve
Ten Zebras Bit My Clavicle
Temporal, Zygomatic, Buccal, Masseteric, Cervical

Supraorbital nerve (and supratrochlear?)
lateral to the supratrochlear nerve
terminal SENSORY branch of frontal nerve of the ophthalmic nerve, Cr. V 1 of trigeminal

infraorbital nerve
The infraorbital nerve, the SENSORY cutaneous termination of the maxillary nerve, Cr. V 2,
exits the infraorbital foramen to supply the skin of the
lateral nose, lower eyelid, upper lip and lateral face.

mental nerve
mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve (CN V).

artery or vein that is formed by two other structures from the face

Common Facial Vein
The anterior division of the retromandibular vein
joins the facial to become the common facial vein.
drains into INTERNAL jugular

facial nerve exiting the Stylomastoid Foramen
SVE – (branchial) muscles of facial expression
GVE - lacrimal, submandibular, sublingual glands (PNS)
SA - inner side of external ear
SA - taste to the anterior 2/3 of the tongue (NTS)
GVA - nasal/oral sensation

Frontal Nerve
The frontal nerve is the largest branch of the ophthalmic nerve(V1) of trigeminal nerve (V)
branches into supraorbital (lateral) and supratrochlear

Supraorbital Nerve
branch of the frontal nerve, off of the opthlamic (v1), off of the trigeminal nerve
innervates: skin over the medial aspect of the nose and forehead

Levator Palpebrae Superioris
muscle directly under the frontal nerve

Superior Oblique Muscle
one view
this is past the trochlea

Superior Oblique Muscle
originating in the upper, medial side of the orbit
innervated by trochlear nerve (cn 4)
nerve going to top muscle on medial side

trochlear nerve
cn 4
goes into superior oblqiue

trochlea
pulley for the superior oblqieu muscles
muscle underneath top muscle
attaches to eyeball

Superior Rectus (2)
below the l levator palpebrae superioris and unlike the levator palpebrae superioris, actually attaches to the eye itself

latera rectus

superior rectus

levator palpebrae superioris muscle

inferior oblqiue

tendon of levator palpebrae superioris muscle

belly of superiro oblqique muscle

lacrimal gland is lateral
parasym secretomor innervagtion from:
- greater petrosal nerve of facial nerve
- zygomatic nerve of maxillary nerve or V2 (branch of trigeminal nerve)

medial rectus
*on same side as superior oblqiue

lateral rectus
describe the course of the occulomotor nerve

occulomotor nerve
It enters the orbit via the superior orbital fissure and controls most of the eye’s movements, including constriction of the pupil and maintaining an open eyelid by innervating the levator palpebrae superioris muscle
innervates:
- parasympathetic innervation of the constrictora pupillae and ciliary muscles of medial rectus, inferior rectus, inferior oblqiue, superior rectus
- somatic motor component of CN III also innervates the levator palpebrae superioris muscles bilaterally. These muscles elevate the upper eyelids.
sx of lesion could be
going to muscle on lateral surface

Abducens Nerve
goes to the lateral rectus

. The anterior ethmoidal branch of nasociliary nerves continues, entering the nasal cavity where it is sensory to the mucosa.

Identify the nasociliary nerve
. This nerve can be found running obliquely toward the medial wall of the orbit, passing between the superior oblique muscle and the medial rectus muscle.
what is 7

the nasociliary nerve
running between the medial rectus and the superior oblqiue

optic nerve
entirely sensory

Superior Ophthalmic Vein
- begins at the inner angle of the orbit in a vein named the nasofrontal which communicates anteriorly with the angular vein;*
- ends in the cavernosa sinus*
- travels with opthalmic artery*
important connections: facial vein via the supraorbital vein

describe how to find the opthalamic nerve or the v1 branch of trgeminal

- identify frontal nerve
- trace it to where it birufcates
should be between the trochlear and the occulomotor

trochlear nerve

abduscens
what berve is being compressed by intenral carotid

abduscens
