Spinal cord Flashcards
What non neural tissue is in the spinal cord
Conus medularis - Cone at the end of the spinal meninges sack
Filum terminale - attaches at Conus and extents to end of spinal cavity (anchors spinal cord)
How many pairs in the sections of the spine
31 in total. 8 in cervical 12 in Thoracic 5 in Lumbar 5 in Sacral 1 in Coccygeal
Where do nerves exit vertebra
Each nerve exits under their respective vertebra (e.g. nerve 5 of lumbar exits under vertebra L5) except 1st cervical that exits above.
What feature is on the dorsal of the spinal cord
Posterior median sulcus
What feature is in the dorsal nerve root and not the ventral
Dorsal root ganglion
What is grey matter
Made up of cell bodies
What are the three grey matter horns called
Lateral, dorsal and central
What feature is on the ventral of the spinal cord
Anterior median fissure
What is white matter
Made up of Myelinated axons
What is the point of the meningeal sack surrounding the spinal cord
Filled with cerebral spinal fluid to protect spinal cord. Runs further than the spinal cord
Where is the spinal cord
In spinal canal of vertebra
Where does the spinal cord start and end
Starts at the foramen magnum
What information flows through the dorsal nerve root
Afferent (sensory)
From PNS to CNS
Where are efferent cell bodies
In ventral horn
What surrounds cell axons (may already be myelinated)
Endoneurium
