Bone formation Flashcards
Epiphysis
Expanded area at both ends of a long bone.
Diaphysis
Long and tubular shaft
Compact bone
Dense bone that is made up of Osteons.
Good for taking pressure from one direction
Axial and Appendicular skeleton
Axial - skull, thorax, vertebral column, ribs (trunk)
Appendicular - Limbs and pectoral and pelvic girdles.
Osteocytes
Controls production and dissolving of done fibers and matrix.
Osteocytes
Controls production and dissolving of bone fibers and matrix.
Osteoblasts
Makes bone fibers and matrix
Osteoclasts
Dissolves bone fibers and matrix
Trabecular
Type of bone made of open network of tissue.
Good for taking pressure from multiple directions.
Canaliculi
Passageways that allow diffusion of nutrients and waste in and out of Osteocytes
Ossification
Formation of bone (from Hyaline cartilage)
Articular cartilage
Cartilage that covers the surface of a bone inside a joint cavity.
Articular capsule
Dense collagen surrounding a joint.
Provides protection and stability.
Synovial membrane
Incomplete layer of fibroblasts in synovial cavity
Synovial cavity
Fluid filled chamber in joint
