Immune response to bacteria Flashcards
1
Q
Why is the innate immune system particularly important against bacteria
A
It blocks MOST opportunistic bacteria that we are always exposed to (through physical and chemical barriers)
2
Q
What is a good example of an Antimicrobial peptide (AMP)
A
Defensin - excreted by cells, attach to bacteria (binding to strongly charged membrane) and disrupt lipid bilayer
3
Q
Where are defensins produced
A
Skin, respiratory tract and gut
4
Q
Describe what Lysosomes do
A
Break apart the glycopeptides of peptidoglycan layers of bacteria cell wall (NAM and NAG)
5
Q
Where are lysozymes produced
A
Skin, airways, tears and breastmilk
6
Q
What type of bacteria are lysozymes especially active against
A
Gram - positive bacteria
