Speech Production Overview (EXAM 1) Flashcards
Nervous System
MASTER PLANNER
Converts thoughts into words into muscle movement
controls the respiratory, phonatory, and articulatory systems
Respiratory System
POWER SOURCE
Breath support for speech
Inhale to charge, exhale to fire
Exhalation airstreams since we speak on exhales
different power needed for different volumes
Phonatory System
SOUND SOURCE
Exhalation stream from respiratory system creates “buzz” sound as it passes through the larynx
Can also change pitch
Protects the airway and lungs from liquid and food when swallowing
Articulatory System
SOUND SHAPER
Modifies the “buzz” sound from larynx into understandable speech
Auditory System
SOUND CONVERTER
Collects heard things and signals for brain to interpret
Auditory system does not interpret sound, just converts sound waves to ear structure movement
Nervous System
SOUND INTERPRETER
Language comprehension, 2 roles:
1. Speaker; monitor self and monitor listener in face to face conversation for understanding
- Listener; understand and interpret speaker, nonverbal cues, gestures, context used
