Respiratory System Lungs Intro (EXAM 1) Flashcards
Respiratory system role in speech
POWER SOURCE
Speech is made in exhalation stream (Aeromechanical level of observation)
SECONDARY ROLE
Mostly automatic, can be voluntary (loudness)
Respiratory system role in biology
BREATHING
Oxygen in, carbon dioxide out
Speech breathing borrows respiratory system for secondary purpose of speech
PRIMARY ROLE
Why is speech secondary?
Biological and speech needs different, breathing is more vital for life than speech
i.e. cannot talk while running
Upper Respiratory Tract
Mouth, nose, pharyngeal cavity
Lower Respiratory Tract
Larynx, trachea, bronchus, bronchioles, alveolar air sacs
Upper Respiratory Tract’s 3 cavities:
- Oral cavity
- Nasal cavity
- Pharyngeal cavity
Upper Respiratory Tract Functions
PASSAGEWAY for air to go to and from the respiratory system (means of inhaling/exhaling)
Larynx
Throat
Sits on top of trachea
Function: PROTECT passageway to respiratory system from foods or liquids
Trachea (Vacuum cleaner hose)
Single airway below larynx
made up of horse-shoe shaped cartilage that maintains its shape
FLEXIBLE
Can be moved in various directions, can expand and collapse
Bronchus(i)
2 principle branches
RIGHT principle branch has 3 secondary branches
LEFT principle branch as 2 secondary branches
still made up of horse-shoe shaped cartilage from trachea
Bronchioles
Smaller branches off of secondary bronchi
COMPLETE circles of cartilage, no ridge or horse-shoe shaped cartilage
terminates into alveolar air sacs
Alveolar air sacs (balloons)
Tiny air-filled balloons
surrounded by blood vessels for oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange
moisture in inside lining causes ST and tendency for it to collapse (leading to elastic recoil for passive exhalation)
Elastic Recoil
Resistance of something to change
once the air sacs expand, elastic recoil is the force that will want to bring the sacs back to normal size (tendency to collapse)
Emphysema
Example of S.T. impairment of air sacs
Air sacs enlarged because of rupturing of inner wall
no moisture/liquid molecules spread out causes lesser ST, lesser recoil, harder time exhaling
linked to cigarette smoking
