Phonatory System: Biological Physiology (EXAM 2) Flashcards
Swallowing
Larynx provides protective role by preventing solids/liquids from entering lungs
3 levels of protection for larynx
- Larynx pulled up and forward
- Epiglottis pulled down
- Glottis closed tight
Larynx pulled up and forward
Muscles: Geniohyoid, Mylohyoid, Digastric anterior
Results: helps move epiglottis over top of airway
pulls larynx away from pharynx where the food is
Pulls epiglottis down
Muscles: Aryepiglottic muscle
Result: Entrance to larynx closed
Glottis closed tight
Muscles: Lateral cricoarytenoids, transverse arytenoids, and oblique arytenoids
Steps
1.) open airway visible while bolus in oral cavity (oral prep)
2.) as food transported out, epiglottis begins to lower, glottis begins to narrow (oral transport)
3.) As food moved in pharyngeal cavity, epiglottis completely lowered and glottis narrows more (oral transport)
4.) Food passes through pharynx, epiglottis completely and glottis closed (pharyngeal transport)
Brief disruption in exhalation during swallowing
Most people swallow in the beginning of exhalation
Resumption of exhaled airflow after swallowing blows away any left behind residue from laryngeal cavity
brief apnea (stopping of breath) while swallowing (since glottis closed)
