Articulatory System: Skeletal Framework Flashcards
Overview
Skull is:
Place of attachment for muscles of articulation
Bony framework for cavities essential to articulation
Protects the brain
2 groups:
1. Facial bones
2. Cranial bones
Facial bones
Nasal
Zygomatic
Maxilla
Mandible
Vomer
Inferior nasal concha
Lacrimal
Palatine
Nasal bone
Bony bridge of nose on top of nasal cavity
Zygomatic bone
Cheek bone
Maxilla
Upper jaw/teeth
Roof of oral cavity
Anterior portion of hard palate
Mandible
Lower jaw
Vomer bone
Bottom 1/2 of medial wall of nasal cavity/nasal septum
(Upper 1/2 of nasal septum is ethmoid bone)
Inferior nasal concha
Bottom 1/3 of the lateral wall of nasal cavity
(Upper 2/3 of lateral wall of nasal cavity is ethmoid bone)
Lacrimal bone
Medial wall of eye socket cavity
Palatine bone
Posterior portion of hard palate (after maxilla), right before the soft palate/velum all the way at the back
Cranial bones
Frontal
Parietal
Occipital
Temporal
Ethmoid
Sphenoid
Frontal bone
Forehead/front
Parietal bone
Behind frontal, lateral walls
Occipital bone
Back of head
Temporal bone
Sides/temple
Ethmoid bone
Upper half of medial wall of nasal cavity/nasal septum
(bottom half is vomer)
Upper 2/3 of the lateral wall of nasal cavity (superior and middle nasal concha)
(Bottom is inferior nasal concha)
Holes serve as passageways for olfactory nerve
Sphenoid bone
Wing between the frontal and temporal bone
Comprises the bony floor of the brain
4 Landmarks:
1. Lateral pterygoid
2. Medial pterygoid
3. Hamulus
4. Pterygomandibular ligament/raphe
Lateral pterygoid
Paired vertical bony inferior projection that is most lateral
Medial pterygoid
Paired vertical bony inferior projection that is most medial
Has the hamulus
Site of pterygomandibular ligament/raphe
Hamulus
Hook-like projection of medial pterygoid
Pterygomandibular ligament/raphe
Extends from hamulus on medial pterygoid to mandible
Boundary between the superior constrictor and buccinator
