Lung Terminology (EXAM 1) Flashcards
Respiratory system as functional unit
Lungs (pulmonary apparatus)
Rib cage (thoracic wall)
Abdomen (Abdominal wall and viscera)
all 3 are a functioning, single unit, hip to lips!
Vital capacity (VC)
Maximum useable volume of air that can be inhaled from rest and exhaled to end of breath
i.e. take deepest breath from rest and breathe it ALL OUT
Resting Volume
Amount of air that you can exhale from resting position (resting = end of exhale)
i.e. how much air you have left after normal exhale; inhale, exhale, exhale further
40% of vital capacity
Includes the residual volume
Tidal Volume
Amount of air inhaled/exhaled during activity
activity dependent
resting tidal volume: how much air you inhale/exhale at rest
Inspiratory Reserve Volume
Amount of air that can be inhaled beyond any 1 tidal volume
Expiratory Reserve Volume
Amount of air that can be exhaled beyond any 1 tidal volume
Technically the resting volume without the residual volume
Residual Volume
Amount of air left in lungs after max exhalation
not used for breathing, not included in vital capacity, and cannot be rid of
