Speech & Aphasia Flashcards
What is the difference btw Broca’s and Wernicke’s aphasia?
- Broca’s = nonfluent speech but good comprehension
- Wernicke’s = fluent speech but poor comprehension
In this disorder, the pt can hear speech but can’t interpret it—similar to listening to a foreign language.
Wernicke’s aphasia
What is the difference btw conduction and global aphasia?
- conduction = fluent speech but good comprehension (damage to Arcuate fasciculus)
- global = nonfluent speech AND poor comprehension (Perisylvian region)
This is an acquired disorder of language caused by brain damage.
aphasia
What is global aphasia?
- the most severe form of aphasia
- destruction of entire perisylvian language zone
- essentially no language
What is amnesia?
an impairment of recent memory, with deficient new learning
What does damage to the Arcuate fasciculus cause?
conduction aphasia
Wernicke’s area is in the left posterior superior temporal region in the posterior part of Broadmann’s area ____.
22
Wernicke’s area is involved in ______ (but not _____).
auditory comprehension but not audition
What is impairment of recent memory, with deficient new learning?
amnesia
What is aphasia?
acquired disorder of language caused by brain damage
______ is in the left posterior superior temporal region in the posterior part of Broadmann’s area 22
Wernicke’s area
Difficulty with repetition is the most salient feature of _____.
Conduction aphasia
This is characterized by nonfluent, effortful speech with preserved auditory comprehension.
Broca’s aphasia
______ is made up of Broadmann’s areas 44 and 45.
Broca’s area
