Special tests (hip & knee) Flashcards
What does the FABER in the FABER test stand for?
Flexion, a24, extension, and rotation
What joint is the FABER test for?
hip
Describe the FABER test?
Figure 4 test, recreates pain if +
Describe the quadrant test?
With pt supine, flex the knee and apply pressure into the hip jt while moving through hip flexion ROM. There are 3 quadrants in this range. Tests for gen. hip pathologies.
If there is clicking or locking of the hip, the pt has labral pathology.
Describe the Scour test?
Similar to the quadrant test only you also do a24 & a44. Recreates pain if +
Describe anterior drawer test?
The knee is at 90dg c patient supine. Facing toward the head of the plinth on the side being tested, place your hands around the superior tibial area, you will feel the hamstrings tendons against the backs of your fingers. Pull anreriorily on the tibia. + if the tibia pulls out.
*Check for hams and quads guarding (you can feel hams in the tendons behind your fingers)
There is also a posterior drawer test
Lachman’s test?
Similar to the drawer tests. Knee is at 20-30dg flexion, place on hand under calf and the other on top of the thigh. Pull the tibia anteriorily like in the drawer test.
Test both sides for consistency
What test is for the MCL and LCL?
Valgus test is for the MCL Varus test is for the LCL
Thessallay's test? (one leg test) Purpose? Position? Action? Positive?
1.THE PURPOSE IS TO ASSESS FOR A LESION IN THE MENISCUS.
2.TEST POSITION IS STANDING.
HAVE TH PATIENT STAND ON THE TEST LEG WITH THE KNEE BENT TO 20 DEGREES.
3.ROTATES THE KNEE MEDIALLY AND LATERALLY 3 TIMES EACH DIRECTION.
4.A POSITIVE TEST EXPERIENCES JOINT LINE DISCOMFORT OR IF LOCKING/CATCHING OCCURS.
EGE’S test?(ballet looking test)
Purpose?
Position?
2 actions one for medial and one for lateral
- THE TEST IS TO DETECT A MENISCUS TEAR. 2.ADMINISTERED STANDING, WITH THE LEGS ABOUT SHOULDER WIDTH APART.
- TO TEST FOR A MEDIAL MENISCUS TEAR HAVE THE PATIENT SQUAT WITH LEGS IN FULL EXTERNAL ROTATION.
- FOR LATERAL MENISCUS TEAR HAVE PATIENT SQUAT WITH LEGS IN FULL INTERNAL ROTATION.
BOUNCE HOME TEST? Purpose? pt position? PTA actions? Positive?
- TEST IS TO DETECT MENISCUS TEAR OR CAPSULAR SPRAIN.
- PATIENT LIES SUPINE ON TABLE,
- EXAMINER CUPS THE PATIENTS HEEL IN HIS HAND. EXAMINER FLEXES THE PATIENT’S KNEE AND ALLOWS THE KNEE TO PASSIVELY EXTEND.
- A POSITIVE TEST IS WHEN THE KNEE EXTENSION IS NOT COMPLETE OR HAS A RUBBERY “SPRINGY BLOCK” END FEEL.
McMURRY TEST?
purpose/positive?
pt position?
PTA actions?
- POSITIVE TEST INDICATES POSSIBLE MENISCUS TEAR.
- PATIENT IS SUPINE. EXAMINER STANDS LATERAL AND DISTAL TO THE INVOLVED KNEE WITH ONE HAND SUPPORTING THE LOWER LEG.
- EXAMINER POSITIONS THUMB AND INDEX FINGER OF THE OPPOSITE HAND IN THE ANTEROMEDIAL AND ATEROLATERAL JOINT LINES ON EITHER SIDE OF THE PATELLAR TENDON. EXAMINER KEEPS THE TIBIA IN THE NEUTRAL POSITION, APPLIES A VALGUS STRESS THROUGH KNEE FLEXION AND A VARUS STRESS THROUGH KNEE EXTENSION. EXAMINER EXTERNALLY ROTATES THE TIBIA AND APPLIES A VALGUS STRESS THROUGH KNEE FLEXION AND A VAREUS STRRESS THREOHG KNEE EXTENSION.
APPLEY’S GRIND TEST? Purpose? pt position? PTA actions? Positive?
- TESTS FOR POSSIBLE MENISCUS TEAR.
- PATIENT IS SUPINE.
- EXAMINER APPLIES PRESSURE TO THE PLANTAR ASPECT OF THE HEEL, APPLYING AN AXIAL LOAD TO THETIBIA WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY ROTATING THE TIBIA.
- PAIN AND POSSIBLE CLICKING INDICATE A POSITIVE TEST.
