Space Flashcards
What are meteoroids
They are objects in space that are smaller than an asteroid
What are meteors
Meteors are meteorides that enter earth’s atmosphere
What are meteorites
The parts of meteorides that do not collide with earth.
What are the types of galaxies
- Spiral
- Elliptical
- Irregular
The Milky Way is a
Spiral Galaxy
What is a galaxy
A colllection of stars with their planets, dust and gas
What is the universe
All of space and everything contained within it
What are galaxies made of
- Stellar Dust
- Gas
- Stars
- Solar Systems
- Planets
What is the force that holds all the parts of a galaxy together
Gravitational Force
What are asteroids
Asteroids are rocky objects that are smaller than planets and orbit the sun in space
What are asteroid belts
The ring that contains most asteroids in the solar system located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter
What are craters
Dents in the surface of a planet or moon caused by the collision of an object with the surface
What are nebalue
Nebulae are clouds and dust of gas in space
What is stellar nursery
A place in a nebula where stars are formed.
What is the easiest nebulae to see in the northern hemisphere
The Orion Nebulae
What is the easiest nebulae to see in the southern hempishere
The Carina nebulae
Give some evidence that supports the collision theory
- The Moon is less dense than the Earth
- Samples of rock from the Moon show that its surface was once molten
- The Moon has a small iron core, similair to the Earth
- The composition of the rocks on the Earth and the Moon are the same
Give some evidence that contradicts the collision theory
- The surface of the Earth does not appear to have ever been molten
- The composition of rocks on the moon would be expected to similair to Theia, but it’s more similair to Earth
- Venus has no moon
What are the two gases most commonly found in nebulae
Hydrogen and helium
What evidence supports the collision theory
- Evidence shows that the surface of the Moon was once molten
- The Moon has a small iron core, like the earth
- The composition of rocks o the earth and the moon are the same
- The Moon is less dense than the Earth
What evidence contradicts the collision theory
- Venus has no moon
- Evidence shows that the surface of the Earth was never molten
How is a star formed
A star is formed when the dust and gas collect together in a stellar nursery and become bigger due to the force of gravity. When the force of gravity increases, the pressure increases causing the star to give out heat and light.
What is the biggest planet in the solar system?
Jupiter
What is the smallest planet in the solar system?
Mercury
Which planet is the closest to the Sun?
Mercury
Which planet is the farthest from the Sun?
Neptune
State the planets in the solar system in order of how close they are to the sun
- Mercury
- Venus
- Earth
4.Mars - Jupiter
- Saturn
- Uranus
- Neptune
What are some strengths of the asteroid collision of the Earth
helps to visualize asteroid collisions which yo u cannot see
normally can investigate relationship between size/speed/height of asteroid and crater size
can investigate relationship between size/speed/height of asteroid and distance travelled by debris
(idea that) it is very easy to do
(idea that) it is easy to repeat (idea that)
What are some weaknesses of the asteroid collision of the Earth
difficult to make it a fair test, e.g. rocks not all the same size/mass
rocks may hit the bottom of the container or soil may not be deep enough
rocks are (much) smaller than real asteroids or forces are (much) smaller than for real asteroids
// cannot represent the real speed of an asteroid hitting the Earth
