Cell Structures Flashcards
What is the function of a nucleus
It controls the activities of the cell
What is the function of the cytoplasm
The cytoplasm is the site of all chemical reactions
What is the function of the cell membrane
It controls which substances are allowed to enter and leave the cell
What is the function of the cell wall
It holds the plant cell in shape and supports the plant
What is the function of chloroplasts
They are the site of photosynthesis, providing food for the plant
What is the function of the vacuole
It stores certain maerials
What is the function of the mitochondria / mitochondrion
The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, providing energy for the plant
What is the function of the ribosomes
They are where protein is made for the cell.
What is the function of the red blood cell
They carry oxygen to the parts of the body
What are some adaptations that help the red blood cell to carry out its function and how
- Lack of Nucleus = This gives the red blood cell more space to carry oxygen
- Biconcave Shape = The biconcave shape of the red blood cell gives a large surface area for more efficient diffusion of oxygen
What is the function of the neurones
They carry electrical signals from one part of the body to another
What are some adaptations that help the neurones carry out their function
- It has a long strand of cytoplasm called an axon which carries electrical signals from one place to another
- It has short strands of cytoplasm called dendrites which sense electrical signals from nearby nerve cells
What is the function of the root hair cell
It absorbs water from the soil.
What is the function of the palisade cell
It’s function is to make food by photosynthesis.
What is homeostasis
Homeostasis, any self-regulating process by which biological systems tend to maintain stability.
