Respiration/Breathing Flashcards
What is respiration
Respiration is the physical process by which we take in air from the environment and release carbon dioxide with the help of a series of organs
What is the respiration system function
It is responsible for breathing and gas exchange. It involves oxygen being transported and absorbed and carbon dioxide being released (waste product)
What is aerobic respiration?
Aerobic respiration is a process that occurs in the presence of oxygen. It involves breaking down glucose molecules to produce energy, carbon dioxide, and water.
What is anaerobic respiration?
Anaerobic respiration is a process that occurs in the absence of oxygen. It involves breaking down glucose molecules to produce energy and other byproducts such as lactic acid or ethanol
What organ do your mouth and nose both connect to
The Trachea
What is the function of the rings of cartilage
They keep the trachea from collapsing
_________1_________ diffuses into the blood capillary from the alveoli and _________2__________ diffuses out of the capillary into the air sac
1 = Oxygen
2 = Carbon Dioxide
Where does diffusion of gases occur?
Air Sacs / Alveoli
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the process by which molecules move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
When you breath in, the intercostal muscles _______________________
contract
Desccribe what happens when the muscles contract
The intercostal muscles contract and move the ribs upwards and outwards. This increases the size of the chest and decreases the air pressure inside it which sucks air into the lungs.
Where is energy released?
The Mitochondria
Word equation for aerobic respiration
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water
What is the function of red blood cells
They transport oxygen to different parts of the body
What is the function of white blood cells
To help us fight against diseases
What is the function of plasma
transport blood cells , nutrients and carbon dioxide
What is the function of the nasal cavity
Warms and humidifies the air
Function of the trachea
Carries air in and out of your lungs
Where does gas exchange occur
Air Sac/ Alveoli
When the diaphragm moves down it causes the contraction of ribcage which also creates the contraction of the lungs. Due to this air enters the lungs
What is the name of this process?
. This whole process is called as inhalation or inspiration.
When the diaphragm moves the ribcage relaxes which also relaxess lungs and air moves out.
What is the name of this process?
This process is called as exhalation or expiration.
Where does respiration take place?
Mitochondria
Thin walled balloon like structures present in the lungs are known as:
Alveoli / Air sac
Word equation for anaerobic respiration
Glucose → Lactic acid (or Ethanol + Carbon dioxide)
What are some adaptations of the alveoili
- They have a large surface area to allow for the diffusion of gases
- They have thin walls that allow for easy diffusion
