Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is photosynthesis
The process by which plants make food
What is the formula for photosynthesis
carbon dioxide + water = glucose + oxygen
What is the process by which plants lose water in the form of water vapor
Transpiration
What is the function of the xylem vessel
It transports water and minerals from the roots to all part of the plants
What cell absorbs water and minerals in the roots
Root Hair cell
What is the function of the phloem vessel
It transfers prepared food ( sucrose) to all parts of the plant
What is the function of magnesium in photosynthesis
Magnesium produces the green pigment known as chorophyll
What is the function of nitrates
It converts carbohydrates to proteins, allowing the plant to grow new cells
What is the function of the stomata
it is the area where the exchange of gases happens by removing oxygen and absorbing carbon dioxide
When a plant doesn’t contain enough water, it becomes soft and floppy. When all the plant cells are like this, we say the plant has __________
wilted
Why do plants need water
- They need water for transporting minerals to the parts of the plant using the xylem vessel.
- Plants need water for photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide and water react for photosynthesis to happen
- Plants need water for cooling. When water evaporates, it carries heat away with it.
How to tell if there is a lack of magnesium
- Plants will begin to look yellow instead of green
- Lack of magnesium will reduce plant growth
How to tell if there is a lack of nitrates
Due to the lack of protein the plant will experience reduced growth
What is the function of phosphates
Phosphates are used for healthy roots
What is the function of potassium
Potassium is for healthy leaves and flowers
What process is used when root hair cells bring water
Osmosis / Diffusion
What process is used when carbon dioxide is gained and oxygen is released in the leaves
Diffusion
What happens when plants lack nitrates
They will experience reduced growth because there will be less proteins and less new cells made because of the lack of nitrates
What happens when plants lack magnesium
They will produce less chlorophyll and will have variegated leaves
Why is photosynthesis important
- It provides energy in the form of chemical energy for other organisms or is a food source for humans and plants
- Photosynthesis provides oxygen for the earth’s atmosphere allowing organisms to undergo respiration
What do plants do when they make more carbohydrate than they need to?
They store it for use later on.
Where do plants store carbohydrates or starch
It is stored in the chloroplasts
What adaptation of leaves allows sunlight to reach it easily
It is very thin so the sunlight can easily enter.
How is water brought to the cells in the leaf
It is brought by the veins
What part of the leaf allows carbon dioxide to enter the plant
The stomata
Why do farmers add fertilisers to the soil
So they can produce a higher yield
