Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is ionic bonding
Ionic bonding is the process by which one atom transfers electrons to the outermost shell of another atom to become stable, resulting in a bond formed by electrostatic attraction
What is an ion
Ions are formed when an atom loses or gains an electron from its outermost shell to become stable
Structures with high melting boiling points and melting points are known as
Giant Structures
What are some properites of ionic bonding
- High melting Point
- High Boiling Point
- Strong Electrostatic forces
- Ionic bonds happen between metals and non metals
- They can conduct electricity
What are covalent compounds
Covalent compounds are formed when two or more non metals share electrons to acheive stability
What are some properties of covalent substances
- They involve 2 non metals sharing electrons.
- They have weak intermolecular forces
- They have low melting points
- They have low boiling points
- They can not conduct electricity
What is the trend in the boiling point from Group 1 to 3
It decreases as you go down the group
What is the trend in the melting point from Group 1 to 3
It decreases as you go down the group
What is the trend in the boiling point from Group 7 to 8
It increases as you go down the group
What is the trend in the melting point from Group 7 to 8
It increases as you go down the group
Structures with low melting boiling points and melting points are known as
Simple Structures
