What should the initial incident commander do at a confirmed or suspected Haz Mat incident?
Establish command post uphill/upwind, isolate and deny entry for a distance of 330’, Evaluate resource needs, Attempt to identify the amount and type of material released from a safe distance, Account for all exposures and evacuate if needed. Establish comms plan and transfer to other agency.
When is a rescue strategy chosen?
When it is determined through reliable witness information or line of sight that there are viable victims unable to rescue themselves.
What is included for PPE when the rescue strategy is chosen?
Full PPE, including SCBA. Full monitor compliment including monitor, F paper and PH paper.
Operations for rescue strategy are?
Emergency decon in place, 2 in 2 out if available, if monitor readings and pH change and victim is in sight still rescue them, If F paper changes terminate rescue because they are not viable. Initiate decon when out of hazard zone.
What happens if in recovery strategy not rescue?
Maintain isolation zones and wait for HazMat team response.
When is recovery strategy chosen?
No reliable information available regarding status of victims or high likelihood that rescue efforts will be unsuccessful.
