Somatic Symptom disorder
- Mostly women
- Multiple and shifting somatic symptoms, often dramatically described
- chaotic life circumstances and abuse are often risk factors
- Alexithymia- Not being able to describe the pain with words
MC somatization syndromes
Nervousness
Back Pain
Weakness
Joint Pain
Illness anxiety disorder also called
hypochondriasis
What is conversion disorder
Loss of physical functioning without explanatory pathology.
- Doesn’t follow neuronal pathways
- Generally starts under some great stress
Somatization disorder criteria
Distressing symptoms in four domains
- GI
- Sexual
- Pseudoneurological
- pain
Must begin before age 30 and persist
Body Dysmorphic Disorder
Pre-occupation with minor or imagined physical flaw, deformity, imagined ugliness
Often comorbid with anxiety disorders
responds somewhat to SSRIs
Factitious disorder
Purposeful self-infliction of signs of illness to illicit medical care.
No reward
Munchausens syndrome
When factitious disorder becomes chronic
Munchausen’s by proxy
When a parent makes the child ill or reports illness
Malingering
Purposeful self injury with some sort of reward in mind
Hypochondriasis must last how long to be considered hypochondriassis
6 mos or more
