Ch 43- Adjustment Disorders Flashcards
What are adjustment disorders
reactions to an identifiable stressor event or situation
Adjustment disorders occur within how long of an event>
3 months
Just keep in mind the idea of resiliency
good general health combined with adequate social resources, sociability, humor, emotional self-awareness, internal locus of control all contribute to resilience
What does the Yerkes Dodson Law state
Performance and adaptive learning are optimal under rather than either high or low stress
- Learning new or difficult tasks is optimal under low/moderate stress
- Performance of well learned tasks is optimal under high stress
The body’s initial reaction to stress is what?
immediate but relatively brief autonomic nervous system response
Look over this chapter briefly the day before the test
ok…Kenny’s study guide also sums up stress’ effect on the body pretty well.
Signs of complicated grief are
intense guilt, prolonged anhedonia, inability to find meaning in life, suicidal ideation.
What is demoralization
A form of patterned maladaption in circumstances that overwhelm normal coping. These pts feel trapped and believe that they cannot master whatever it is that troubles them.
Differentiating between depression, grief, and demoralization
Depression- lose the capacity to enjoy anything
Grief- they have a desire for and an ability to respond to empathic social interactions
Demoralization- These types of pts may improve if given more control over whatever has made them demoralized. (such as control in medical decisions)
PTSD symptoms must last longer than
1 month
What are the components of PTSD
- Arousal: sleep disturbance, irritability, poor concentration,
- Intrusion: Nightmares, flashbacks, forced recollection, physiologic reactivity
- Avoidance
- Negative emotional and cognitive change
Treatment of PTSD requires
Trauma informed care
What is acute stress disorder
Symptoms are precipitated by an acute stress or trauma and may last UP TO 1 MONTH. Past one month it may be referred to as PTSD
