Solubility of Gases and Solids, Henry's Law Flashcards
Generally, solids get ___ _____ in water as you raise the temperature.
more soluble (they dissolve more)
Generally, gases get____ _____ in water as the temperature rises
less soluble
temperature and solubility of solids is directly or indirectly related?
directly. As temp rises so does solubility
temperature and solubility of gases is directly or indirectly related?
indirectly. As temp rises,solubility decreases
Why does gas become less soluble as temperature increases?
Gas molecules will move FASTER as temperature rises. When a gas is dissolved in liquid, raising the temp increases the gas molecules speed, which causes more and more gas molecules to escape/leave the liquid
Why is soda served cold and in pressured cans?
Bc more gas dissolves in liquid at low temp and more gas is disolved with more pressure. So more carbon dioxide can dissolve in a cold pressurized drink, giving it more fizz.
Pressure and solubility of gases is directly or indirectly related?
Directly. increased pressure = increased solubility
Henry’s Law
Pa=k*{A}
Pa=gas’ pressure in the solution
k= gas’ concentration in moles per liter (Molarity)
{A}= constant that differs for each gas, solvent, temp
Instead of remembering Henry’s Law, just remember that if you increase/decrease pressure of a gas solution, you must also increase/decrease __________ by the same factor
concentration of gas molecuels
