Osmosis Flashcards
What is osmosis?
The flow of WATER from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. We are looking at the concentration of WATER, bc water is the only thing that moves.
What is the purpose of osmosis?
To create equilibrium. OR make the concentrations of WATER on both sides of a semi-permeable membrane equal.
Osmotic Pressure
the amount of pressure you have to apply to STOP osmosis
You can use the ____ law to calculate osmotic pressure?
ideal gas law
PV=nRT
*different is; P =osmotic pressure; n needs to be multiplied by # of ions
Osmotic pressure and solute concentration are directly or indirectly related?
directly.
***do NOT confuse this with the indirect relationship between vapor pressure and solute
Do not confuse osmotic pressure/solute concentration relationship with ______/solute concentration relationship
vapor pressure
Osmotic pressure & solute conc. = direct relationship
vapor pressure & solute conc. = indirect relationship
