Atomic Orbitals Flashcards
are atomic orbitals 2D circles?
No. They are a variety of shapes, the electrons zoom through various 3D regions called orbitals
Name the 4 classes of orbitals?
s, p, d, and f
define atomic orbital
regions of space around an atom’s nucleus where electrons are
S orbital shape? How many S orbitals
3D sphere
-2… 1S and 2S
P orbital shape?
dumbbells. Each P orbital has 3 separate p orbitals; one on the x axis, y axis, and z axis
D orbital shape?
There are 5 separate D orbitals. 4 are shaped like a four leaf clover and 1 looks like a donut/dumbbell combination
where are transition metals rightly colored?
Because of the funky way D orbitals are shaped and allow electrons to absorb light and get promoted to higher energy orbitals within the D shell (and when they come back down they give off color)
F orbital shape?
there are seven different shapes and orbitals per shell
What is the s block?
first two columns plus He on periodic table
–2 columns> 1 s orbital per shell
What is the f block?
it is the section of the periodic table that is removed and placed at the bottom of the chart, it is 14 columns wide
–14 columns> 7 f orbitals per shell
what is the d orbital?
middle section of the periodic tale that has all of the transition metals and is 10 columns wide
–10 columns> 5 d orbitals per shell
what is the p block?
last 6 columns of the periodic table on the far right side
–6 columns> 3 p orbitals per shell
