Relative Rx Rate, Rate Law, Integrated Rate Law -Chemical Kinetics Flashcards
What is chemical kinetics?
the study of how fast (speeds and rates) reactions occur.
What does chemical kinetics tell us? What does it NOT tell us?
It tells us how fast a reaction proceeds. It does NOT tell us if a reaction will happen, if a reaction involves an energy change, or if a reaction is at equilibrium.
What does thermodynamics tell us?
Everything that kinetics does not. It tells us if a reaction will happen, but NOT how fast it’ll happen.
How do we express a reaction’s rate?
amount of reactant or product appearing or disappearing / time
Typically in rate expressions, the reactants have a _____ and products have a _____ change in concentration. Why?
reactants have negative and products have positive change in concentration BC reactants are disappearing and products are appearing
Do products appear in rate law?
No. Only reactants appear in rate law
Rate Law equation?
Rate = k * [A]^m * [B]^n
Integrated rate law tells us?
allows us to calculate actual concentrations of reactants and products for a reaction over tie, not just relative concentrations (relative rx rate) or how changing concentrations will change the rate (rate law)
Units for the y-axis of a straight lined graph for integrated rate law must be?
0 order= [concentration]
1st order= ln[conc.]
2nd order= 1/[conc.]
