Dynamic Equilibrium Flashcards
What is dynamic equilibrium?
means that the speed at which the reactants are converting to products is equal to the speed at which products are converting back to reactants
Dynamic equilibrium does NOT mean?
does not mean that the amounts of reactants and products are equal. Does NOT mean you have the same amount of stuff on both sides of the reaction.
Once equilibrium is reached, do concentrations keep changing?
No. Concentrations STOP changing, but the reaction is still going both ways (left to right and vice versa)
unlike one-way reactions, equilibrium reactions’ rate constants DO depend on ____?
the reaction’s coeffecients and NOT on the reaction’s mechanism
Equilibrium constant equation
Kc = [products]/[reactants] Kc = [C]^c*[D]^d/[A]^a*[B]^b
dynamic equilibrium _____ rate = _____ rate
forward rate = reverse rate
What is Kc’s unit for equilibrium units?
No units. Kc doesn’t have units
Do solids and liquids appear in equilibrium constants?
NO
Do not include solids or liquids in Kc even if they appear in an equilibrium reaction?
Kc is an equilibrium constant in terms of _____?
concentrations in molarity (moles solute/liters of solution) (that’s why we use the “c” in Kc)
Only a change in _____ can change the equilibrium constant K.
temperature
Kp is an equilibrium constant in terms of _____?
Pressure (for gases)
Does Kc and Kp have to equal each other?
No
If K(eq) is more than 1?
products favored at equilibrium
If K(eq) is less than 1?
reactants favored at equilibrium
