Solid Tissue Cytology Flashcards
What are the three types of cytologic samples?
Fluids
Needle Aspirates
Solid tissue imprints
What are the advantages of cytology to a clinician?
Economical
Rapid
Profitable to practice
What is the nuclear criteria for malignancy?
Anisokaryosis Abnormally clumped Chromatin Abnormal nuclei Micronuclei Variable sized nuclei in same cell Nuclear molding
What are the three classifications of tumors?
Round (discrete) cell tumors
Tumors of epithelial origin
Tumors of connective tissue origin
What are the characteristics of Round (discrete) cell tumors?
Round and Individual
What is the suffix for a benign tumors of epithelial origin?
-oma
What is the suffix for a malignant tumor of epithelial origin?
carcinoma
What is the suffix for a benign tumor of a gland?
-Adenoma
What is the suffix for a malignant tumor of a gland?
-Adenocarcinoma
What are some characteristics of Epithelial tumors?
Cells in sheets or clusters many cell present distinct cytoplasmic borders cells often large with abundant cytoplasm shows signs of differentiation
What are the characteristics of Mesenchymal tumors?
Elongated nuclei and cytoplasmic tails (spindle cells)
Few cells present
cells are individual but in clusters sometimes with intracellular matrix
Active fibroblasts resemble malignant mesenchymal cells
What tumors are Round discrete cells tumors?
Lymphoma Plasma cell tumor MCT TVT Histiocytoma Malignant histiocytosis
What tumors are Epithelial cell tumors?
Perianal Prostatic tumors Hepatoid tumors Sebaceous epithelial tumors Basal Cell tumor Squamous cell carcinoma Thyroid carcinoma
What tumors are Mesenchymal tumors?
Fibrosarcoma Hemangiopercytoma Neurofibrosarcoma Peripheral nerve sheath tumor Osteosarcoma Malignant melanoma
