Magnesium Flashcards
What is the function of Magnesium?
Facilitates Sodium/Potassium ATPase activity in cell membranes
structural role in bone formation
important role in PTH synthesis and release
Roles in cell membrane functions: Nerve conduction, Calcium channel activity, and Phosphorus transport
Causes of Hypomagnesemia?
Lost through the GI trct, kidney, and skin in horses
Fluid diuresis
renal disease
Hypercalcemia will inhibit magnesium reabsorption
Dietary deficiency in ruminants
Grass tetany
Milk tetany
What disorders are associated with Hypomagnesemia?
Diabetes Mellitus
Hypercalcemia
Hyperaldosteronism
Third space syndromes
Clinical signs with hypomagnesemia?
Hyperexcitability Tremors Fasciculation Ataxia Frank tetany Cardiac arrythmias possible arrest Coronary artery spasms in humans
Causes of Hypermagnesemia?
Impaired Renal function
Magnesium containing laxatives or antacids
decreased GFR
Clinical signs of Hypermagnesemia?
Paresis
