conformity
change in a person’s behaviour or opinions as a result of real or imagined pressure from a person or group of people
majority influence
the most common form of conformity where an individual or small group is influenced by a larger or more dominant group
compliance
a type of conformity where individuals adjust the beliefs and attitudes they voice in public so that they are in line with the majority; there is no change to privately held beliefs and only lasts while the group is present
internalisation
a type of conformity where individuals adjust the beliefs and attitudes which they personally hold so that they are in line with the majority; this is a deeper and more permanent form of conformity
identification
a type of conformity where individuals adjust their beliefs and attitudes to conform with those of a group which they value. it is possible to agree with the group publically, while also disagreeing privately
Normative social influence (NSI)
Copying behaviours of others to counteract the fear of rejection and ridicule and to fit in instead
Informational social influence (ISI)
Conformity where an individual does not know how to behave in a situation and so look to others on how to behave, usually conforming to the majority in the desire to be correct.
