Deviation from social norms definition
Any behaviour that does not follow accepted social patterns or social rules.

• Deviation from social norms looks at the impact of an individuals’ behaviour upon other people
• The behaviour that is displayed is examined in terms of how desirable the behaviour is for the individual and for society as a whole
• Rules can be very explicit and to break them could mean breaking the law
• Deviation from social norms can be seen to be abnormal and undesirable
• Deviation from social norms can be used to help identify a person who might be suffering from a mental disorder
• If a person is behaving in a strange way that deviates from what is expected of them, then we could become concerned enough to think that the person might be suffering from a mental disorder.
